Insurance Estimate Tips0. Take immediate steps after the damage to get your vessel to a repair facility either via captain or towing service so they may minimize the damage and start the process of dealing with the insurance adjustor. 1. Never rely on an insurance adjustor to estimate your boat. They will write an estimate for their employer, the insurance company, but generally do not have the expertise or time to write a repair quote correctly. The only people that can write a repair quote is a repair facility. Most boat owners would be surprised to see how many $12,000.00 to $15,000.00 damage estimates turn out to be total losses. 2. The cost of bringing your vessel to our yard whether it is towed or captained is usually paid for by the insurance company. 3. On the yard storage of your damaged vessel is usually paid for by the insurance company until it can be repaired. 4. Never sign a document which says that the insurance is making final payment for your claim. There are, on average, three addendums to an insurance claim. As the work proceeds, there are always additional problems with electrical, mechanical or structural components which require additional funds to repair. 5. In most cases, your vessel is designed to be "offshore capable" and should be repaired to that same standard for you and your own families safety. Also, the only people who should repair your vessel should be capable of "yacht grade" quality repair. Otherwise, you will lose a considerable amount of money when you go to resell or worse, when the boat fails structurally while you are on it.
